Foutas, Extremely Light Towels - Tunisian Fairtrade Handicrafts

The fouta is a staple in bath house culture. Originally from Tunisia, it was and still is used for hamam visits. Today we can find foutas everywhere. Men and women still bring a fouta when visiting a hammam. Foutas are everywhere in Tunisia. You can see foutas hung in doorways to keep the flies out. Indoors they are used as bedspreads or to cover couches and beds. During summer foutas cover the white Mediterranean beaches with their vivid colors. You can see women and men use them as beach cover ups and on chillier evenings women wrap luxurious foutas around them for a bit of added warmth. They can always be used as the perfectly sized and comfortable picnic blanket. We don’t need to tell you anymore that a fouta is much more than an ordinary towel.

Because of the high quality supple thread, foutas are extremely lightweight, easy to fold and carry, highly absorbent and they dry very quickly. Because of the high quality cotton and linen used to produce foutas, they become even softer and fluffier with each washing. They are as long-lasting as they are beautiful.

Due to their variety of uses and advantages, it is not surprising that the Fouta have found their way to the rest of the Mediterranean countries. Second to the Tunisian fouta, the Turkish peshtemal has gained popularity over the years.

Even though foutas have many different uses and advantages, their production is on the decline and cheap towels coming from other countries flood the market. Our goal is not only to keep the weaving of traditional fouta productive in Tunisia, but also to help artisans find a global market for this beautiful, multifaceted piece of extraordinary fabric.

We offer a broad range of original Tunisian foutas. They can be found in the original vibrant colorways but also in more subdued, modern versions. Most recently we even come upon foutas with geometric patterns, which are designed by the artisans themselves. After the production of the fabric, the finishing touches are added by a team of women artisans. They add tassels, knots and embroidery by hand. These make sure to add that bohemian flair to your bathrooms and anywhere else you would like to use the fouta.
